AUDIO SAMPLES

This is a short audio comparison. The original was recorded on a portable hand held 2 track cassette recorder. The content being the self recorded memories and stories of a loved one who has passed on. The original recording was 75 minutes, and was recorded in 1 or 2 minute intervals, additionally side 2 the left track was nothing but noise.  After cleaning, rematching pitch and tempo, editing for pauses and content the mastered CD ended up being 55 minutes. As such an important family treasure, I took the time and effort to try and fulfill the intent and wishes to present the content in a listen-able story form, creating a family heirloom that will be shared for generations. The satisfaction in such work always out weights the compensation.

This is an excerpt from an old 78 record. I purchased the lot off e-bay, received in same box and condition as found in shed somewhere in SC, red clay, hay and newspaper as packing material. After the record was painstakingly cleaned and treated recording was accomplished on a Stanton turntable using the analog out, imported directly to a WAV file. The first clip is listen-able even with out additional filtering, noise from wear rather than actual scratching is more the issue. This is a good representation of older 78's and the sound they generally provide. The second clip has been "cleaned" and at this extreme there are trade offs, although almost noise free loss of tone, clarity, and some digital distortion creeps in. Generally leaving some noise gives character and keeps the tonal quality of the original intact. Any where in between is accomplish-able depending on your preference and condition of media.

Dr. Suka Chapel-Horst

Dr. Suka Chapel-Horst is a specialist in the adiction recovery field. Her work continues to help people everywhere. This is a short promotional piece. It was accomplished with a single camera, (Sony HDDR550) and a separate audio recorder (Zoom H2). Recorded at the Dr. Suka's home using available lighting, and a teleprompter. Finished product includes narration and background music, there is also a nice video clone effect of the pillows on the right side that covers some clutter on the floor.  And the dog is real...

Tadashi Torri

Tadashi is exceptional artist and craftsman creating his own unique collection of art and functional glass pieces inspired in part by his heritage, nature and the human spirit. Tadashi Torii's work can be found in numerous private collections, public spaces and museums. The video was shot with 2 cameras (Sony HRNX-70u), straight forward editing of content, slow-motion on last shot, overlay of finished art work and incorporation of artists logo in credits as well as the creation of a sound track.

The "BaRT"

This is a simple promotional video for  the "Bart" a new inexpensive easy to use medical device for balance and strength training. The video was shot with 1 camera, in a single session. Actual footage of use was by a non professional with the inventor and  Physical therapist Bart Rankin who did his own narration as well. Additional pictures were acquired thru open source (Wiki commons). The end results are a simple to the point and inexpensive solution for promotion of products and ideas.

SHOWS/PLAYS

Unity Plays Broadway
This is a number from Unity Plays Broadway 2012. A fairly ambitious  annual theatrical production put on by Unity of Mills River, NC. It features numbers from various Broadway plays. Recording was accomplished with 2 cameras a Sony HDDR550 and Sony HXRNX70U. Video being recorded in full HD 1080i AVHD format. Audio was recorded using the boom mic and mono XLR input from sound board as well as separate audio recorder (Zoom H2). Video was imported directly into the editing software, Editing was ambitious as well, pan/zoom and color matching between cameras and shots, footage used from 2 different performances as well as editing and syncing audio. Finished product includes You-Tube posting and DVDs including cover art and case inserts.

Asheville Vaudeville
Featuring Valerie Meiss, performing "Vaudivie's Song"  from Asheville Vaudeville's Halloween Special 2010. The HD video was captured on a Sony HDR-FX1000 and a Sony HDR550. Video is imported  directly through the editing software, preserving the quality of the original video . Audio is a stereo mix  from both the camera and a Zoom H2 recorder. Both video and audio are heavily edited. Video pan, zoom, fade, cross fade, and balancing of color and contrast between camera and individual shots as well as opening and closing credits with individual effects and sound.. Audio was not available from the sound board, and though recorded separately to a ZOOM H2 placement was not ideal.  The goal is always to get a good balance that represented the live performance and yet is a stand alone listen-able audio track. To accomplish the  audio was exported,  EQ'd, compressed, noise removed, and re-mixed, then re-imported and synced to the video. Overall a good professional video.

LIVE MUSIC

Tuba Skinny
Another on the fly recording. Recorded on the street with my Sony HXRNX70U and Zoom H2 audio recorder. Video recorded on full HD 10801 AVHD format. Pretty straight forward a little eq on the audio and some color adjustment to give a stylized older look. Original shot was stationary so zoom and movement are accomplished in the edit. Title font/Style was selected  to match performers font on CD.

Kaliq Woods
A live performance  featuring Kaliq WoodsI really do like recording and putting together this kind of video. Though subtle there are over 20 individual post production effects including  pan/zoom, end credits and as Kaliq was accompanied by boom box with beat loop some audio magic to remove distortion . Shot with Sony prosumer HDR 550 small form factor video camea, and onboard mic.

Richard Shulman & Friends

This is a sample of a live jazz performance featuring Richard Shulman and his jazz trio. The video was captured using a Sony prosumer camcorder HDR-FX1000 directly to an external DVD recorder via the camera A/V out. Though simple for capture and playback, this is not the recommended medium for editing as it requires format conversion during the importing, editing and export to final medium. This is time consuming and results in degraded video quality. Audio is single track mono on the fly recording straight off the sound board to CD. Synced together some EQ and finding the right place to cut you end up with a very nice 10 minute you-tube piece.

Sirius B "Guerra Santa 2" Live at Jack of the Woods

Recording from the CD release party of "The triumphant Return of One Eyed Norman" performed live at  Jack of the Woods, Asheville NC. Definitely a challenge, both for video and audio. Venue is oddly shaped requiring hand held cam from just off stage right in middle of dancers and drinkers...Main cam squeezed in back of house, constantly bing jostled as well by revilers and further challenged by the need for a bit of zoom which degrades low light performance. Recorded with a Sony HRNX-70U and Sony HDR 550. Audio input consists of mono XLR from soundboard and on-board boom mic. The 3 audio tracks were remixed to 4 different tracks and independently mastered, then mixed down to the 2 track stereo you hear. Almost all the Video was from the primary fixed cam edited to look like 2 cams using transitions and digital zoom in the edit. Also contrast and gamma tweaked a bit to clean up digital noise (pixelation). End result is a very good video which in it's presentation captures the feel and energy of the live event.....

Xavier Hawk Thunderbird
Another on the fly recording. Xavier Hawk Thunderbird "Tribal, Techno-sonic Medicine Man" Talented and unique. Recorded with my Sony HXRNX70U and Sony HDR 550, audio was a mix-down from the mono feed off the sound board, Zoom H2 audio recorder and stereo mic on camera. Video recorded on full HD 10801 AVHD format. Low lighting is a challenge on small form factor cameras but there was enough contrast to allow for my signature rendering, which includes overdriving contrast, color and using a "Black screen" mask. Sound was a bit of a challenge as vocals under mic'd and didgeridoo not at all, this again being a one off performance with free flowing interactive input from audience as part of the sonic and energetic ambiance...

David De la Rosa

David with the Unitic band performing "Who Will Decide". Recorded with a Sony HRNX-70U. Audio input consists of mono xlr from soundboard and on-board boom mic. The 2 audio tracks were remixed to 4 different tracks independently mastered and then mixed down to the 2 track stereo you hear. Video was shot from a single camera. The footage is from 2 different performances as well incorporating an independent shot of the piano taken between sets.  Since the piano rift was ad-libbed syncing of the closeup video to the audio track was impossible, so it ended up being a composite matching as many notes as I could then over dubbing...
